The 4th North Eastern European Meeting (NEEM) will open tomorrow in Riga, Latvia with prostate, bladder and renal cancers topping the scientific agenda during the two-day meeting.

"The discussion will focus on actual urological issues and guest speakers from across Europe will present updates on a variety of subjects such as how to achieve the best surgical and functional results in radical prostatectomy, treatment options in high-risk non muscle invasive bladder cancer, treatment options in upper tract TCC to the limitations of nephron-sparing surgery in renal cell carcinoma," said Dr. Alvis Laukmanis, president of the Latvian Urological Association and local host of the 4th NEEM.

Organisers are expecting around 200 participants to gather in Riga for the fourth edition of the meeting which begun in 2007 in Tampere, Finland. This year out of the 92 abstracts received, 86 passed the screening committee and will be presented in nine poster sessions to be held on Friday and Saturday, September 10 to 11.

Abstract contributions came from Austria, Belarus, Estonia, Finland, Iran, Italy, Latvia, Lithuania, Poland, Portugal, Romania, Russia, Serbia, Turkey, Ukraine and the United Kingdom. As in 2009, participants from Poland and Turkey were amongst the top abstract contributors this year, with the host country accounting for around 11 accepted abstracts.

The NEEM is the first regional meeting to be held this year, followed by the 6th South Eastern European Meeting (SEEM) to be held in Istanbul from October 1 to 2, and the 10th Central European Meeting scheduled on October 22 to 23 in Bratislava, Slovakia.
