ESU programme: trends in science and practice

Mon, 30 Jan 2012

At the 27th Annual EAU Congress in Paris, the Education Office of the EAU has scheduled numerous courses for continuous medical education. By revising the courses and recruiting new faculty members, the European School of Urology (ESU) aims to offer course participants high quality, clinically-oriented information that can be of immediate use in their clinical practice.

This year, the ESU offers 38 specialised courses that cover a wide range of topics. With two courses in last year’s congress attracting less than the expected numbers, the ESU will introduce in Paris Course 24 which tackles the topic “Flexible ureterorenoscopy and retrograde intrarenal surgery” chaired by Prof. O. Traxer (Paris, FR), and a course on “Single port surgery and hybrid procedures” chaired by Dr. E. Liatsikos (Patras , GR). As in previous years, experts subspecialising in prostate cancer (PCa) management will have the opportunity to update their knowledge in courses focusing on PCa treatment – from screening, diagnosing and staging to surgical treatment. One can also enroll in courses which present the most essential information on managing other urological diseases as well as courses dedicated to new technologies, research and scientific publication methodology. This year’s programme also features courses dedicated to minimally invasive approaches in managing urological diseases, which proved to be successful in previous congresses. In Paris, the latest updates and current trends in this field will be offered to participants, and some of these well-attended courses include the following, to name a few: “Advanced course on laparoscopic nephrectomy” (chaired by Prof. V. Pansadoro, IT), “Robot-assisted laparoscopic prostatectomy,” (chaired by Prof. J-U. Stolzenburg, DE), and “Laparoscopy for beginners,” (chaired by Mr. A.D. Joyce, GB).

Responding to the feedback from participants in previous congresses, we are again offering our most successful courses, including “Update on stone disease,” chaired by Prof. M. Marberger (AT), “Laparoscopic and robot-assisted laparoscopic radical cystectomy”, chaired by Prof. P. Wiklund (SE) and “Radical cystectomy and orthotopic bladder substitution – surgical tricks and management of complications”, chaired by Prof. U. Studer (AT).
