Dr. A. Goh to discuss a complex robotic operation based on the principles of open surgery

One of the special activities at the upcoming congress will be European Urology’s Surgery in Motion session, to be held on the third day 17 March 2013. This session will cover some of the best video presentations with a focus on minimally invasive surgery which had been published by the European Urology journal within the course of 2012.Chaired by Prof. Francesco Montorsi, the journal’s Editor-in-Chief and Dr. H.G. Van Der Poel, the session will include the presentations on robot assisted laparoscopic partial nephrectomy, LESS partial nephrectomy without ischemia for small, exophytic renal masses, and robotic intracorporeal orthotopic ileal neobladder.

The latter presentation will be given by Dr. Alvin Goh (Houston, US), who will be focusing on the possibilities of replicating open surgical principles within such a procedure.

In his commentary, Dr. Goh explained that the main aim of his talk will be to illustrate a step-by-step approach that is systematic and can be easily replicated by other surgeons.

“I will emphasise technical points to increase efficiency and optimise this complex operation in a minimally invasive approach,” summed up Goh. “Short- and long-term outcomes of our experience thus far will also be presented.”

The use of video material during this session is of great importance and is central to bringing the point across.

“I will extensively employ video throughout the presentation to provide clear visualisation of each step of the procedure,” underlined Dr. Goh. “We have developed this complex robotic operation while respecting the principles of open surgery. By breaking it down into standardized steps, we have improved time efficiency and achieved reliable outcomes.”

The presentation will take place on Sunday, 17 March 2013, from 11:00 to 13:00 in the Platinum Hall - Level S3
