From basic science to the clinic

Translational research is one of the most discussed topics in the scientific community: it harbours great potential and promises exciting opportunities, both for further research and clinical application. This year’s 3rd Multidisciplinary Meeting on Urological Cancers (EMUC) will hold a separate session dedicated to translating basic science to the clinic, featuring two state-of-the art lectures.The session will take place on the third day of the meeting - Saturday, 5 November – and will be chaired by Profs. M. Brausi (Italy) and S. Fossa (Norway).

The first lecture of the series will be presented by Prof. S. Osanto (the Netherlands), who will discuss the current state of events regarding the research on MiRNAs. MiRNAs have been implicated in the pathogenesis of various onco-urological diseases, including prostate, bladder and renal cancers, and their potential as new therapeutic targets are much debated today. Prof. Osanto will bring the delegates up to speed regarding the latest developments in this field as well as the associated challenges.

Prof. N.Maitland (UK) will follow with his presentation on stem cells.Research on stem cells in urology focuses on a number of fields. Apart from such regenerative applications with a potential in renal replacement, bladder augmentation and neoconstruction among others, stem cell research in urology looks for possible therapeutic solutions and in-depth understanding of cancer pathenogenesis.

The 3rd EMUC will take place on 4-6 November in Barcelona, Spain.
