10th SEEM: Uro-oncology topics win nod of jurors in Country Competition

Sun, 26 Oct 2014

Presentations on urological cancers won the top prizes in the Country Competition for young urologists at the EAU 10th South Eastern European Meeting (SEEM) which ended today in Belgrade, Serbia.

Uros Bumbasirevic (Serbia) won the first prize for his presentation regarding quality of life of testis cancer survivors, a study which took into account the treatment, complications and quality of life measurements for testis cancer patients. Not many studies are done on the topic and jurors praised the work for its insights, particularly the fact that urologists seldom take time to talk to cancer patients regarding quality of life issues.

Second prize went to Dr. Tayfun Oktar, the second challenger from Turkey, who took up postnatal management of antenatal hydronephrosis.

Prodromos Philippou of Cyprus bagged the third prize for his presentation on squamous cell carcinoma of the penis. His detailed overview on safety and challenges in organ-sparing options such as partial penectomy and lymphadenectomy won the jury’s nod.

The Country Competition, a recent feature of the scientific programme in the annual regional meetings, aims to encourage young urologists to present innovative studies and ideas in urologic concepts and procedures. Ten participants, from nine countries, presented yesterday their cases with topics ranging from paediatric urology, uro-oncology, female urology to stone disease.

The Country Competition is one of the well-attended activities of the regional meetings, and has prompted enthusiastic reactions from both participants and the audience.
