ESU course presented latest advances in andrology to Iraqi urologists
On 9 January, a comprehensive three-hour virtual course by the European School of Urology (ESU) took place on the final day of the 13th National Congress of the Iraqi Urology Association (8-9 January 2025). Chaired by Dr. Carlo Bettocchi (IT), the andrology course focused primarily on erectile dysfunction (ED) and penile prosthesis implantation.
The course attracted 120 participants and served as a valuable platform for the exchange of expert insights and emerging practices in andrology.
The first half of the scientific programme covered ED, starting with an overview of the European Association of Urology (EAU) Guidelines for the diagnostic evaluation of ED. There was also a lecture on office-based management approaches, including strategies for lifestyle modifications, oral medications, and injectable therapies. Experts also discussed advanced therapeutic modalities, including shockwave therapy, platelet-rich plasma (PrP), and stem cell treatments - highlighting both their biological rationale and the current clinical evidence. There were also lectures covering recent updates in Peyronie’s disease management, as well as treatment options for penile curvature.
The second part of the course focused on penile prothesis surgery. Topics included appropriate patient selection, indications, and the importance of thorough pre-operative counselling. Detailed surgical video demonstrations provided practical insights, and real-time illustrations and guidance of procedural techniques, plus expert tips. Post-operative care, including standardised follow-up protocols, and troubleshooting strategies to optimise long-term outcomes were also addressed.
The course concluded with an interactive case discussion, led by a panel of international experts. Local presenters contributed valuable regional perspectives and enriched the discussions, which was constructive and engaging. The audience actively participated with insightful questions and comments, fostering a collaborative and interactive learning environment.
Feedback from participants was overwhelmingly positive. Many highlighted the value of the surgical videos, especially for those with limited experience in the featured procedures. Participants also appreciated the well-balanced content, which catered to both experienced urologists and those newer to the field. “The practical focus and clear delivery made complex topics approachable,” one attendee commented.
