ESUT Live Surgery: watch cases online

Mon, 18 Apr 2011

The 26th Annual EAU Congress featured an extensive live surgery session organised by the EAU Section of Uro-Technology. The cases from this full-day session were edited into a series of educational cases and can now be viewed though EAU Education Online section.Following a more than 10-year tradition of Live-surgery sessions, the EAU Section of Uro-Technology (ESUT) presented ambitious programme focussing on novel techniques in percutaneous, endourological, laparoscopic, and robotic-assisted procedures at the Annaul EAU Congress 2011 in Vienna.

This year, with “From Lab to OR – are we ready?”, ESUT combined the demonstration of experimental and clinical cases. The aim was challenge new technological improvements of TRUS-guided biopsies by the results demonstrated by the pathologist. Therefore, these cases were pre-recorded on Friday, March 18, 2011 to allow sufficient time for diagnosis.

This session was conducted in collaboration with the EAU Section of Imaging in Urology (ESIU). Novel techniques for ablation of benign and malignant tissue included high-intensity focused ultrasound (HIFU), laser-mediated vascular therapy, laser enucleation and vaporisation, as well bipolar vaporisation. In the laparoscopic and robot-assisted cases, we compared new access techniques (LESS versus SMART/Mini-LAP versus NOTES) as well as new instruments and devices (CAMeleon, Kymerax, ETHOS) improving the ergonomics of laparoscopy. Finally, the latest digital developments for flexible endoscopy of the upper urinary tract for diagnosis and treatment of tumors and calculi were demonstrated. This session was conducted in collaboration with the EAU-session of urolithiasis (EULIS).

The ESUT-faculty consists of internationally well-known experts serving as surgeons and moderators. The different surgical procedures were transmitted from two sites (Vienna, Heilbronn).
