Mont Ventoux Challenge: Cycle together to fight against prostate cancer
EAU Secretary General Prof. Stenzl is gearing up for another Mont Ventoux challenge - will you be joining him? On 7 September 2024, the French Association of Urology (AFU) will host its annual Mont Ventoux cycle climb, featuring former pro cyclist Bernard Hinault. This event aims to raise public awareness about the critical role of sport in health and the fight against prostate cancer.
Last year, 500 urologists, patients, and cycling enthusiasts took on the challenging Mont Ventoux, a climb which is often featured in the gruelling Tour de France race. Organised by the Vélo Club La Pomme Marseille this year, the AFU event offers two varying routes, allowing participants to choose a distance and pace that suits their abilities. There is the option to participate with a regular bike or an electric bike.
AFU President Prof. Alexandre De La Taille underscores the importance of physical activity, advising his patients: "We have to move! Sport helps to prevent cancer and slows down the progression of the disease. It also helps with psychological wellbeing."
According to AFU, the role of sport in the prevention of chronic diseases and cancers is now well established. But too often, the combination of physical activity remains underestimated during and after cancer. However, in the context of prostate cancer in particular, research shows exercise can offer:
- A 36% reduction in disease-related fatigue, regardless of the stage of cancer
- A reduction in the side effects of certain treatments
- Improved body image, sleep, and decreased anxiety and depressive symptoms
New to this year’s AFU awareness campaign is a scientific meeting, to be held the day before the cycle ride, dedicated to the general public. This meeting will focus on the positive effects of sport, as well as new developments in the diagnosis and treatment of prostate cancer.
According to Dr. Francois Rozet, administrator of the AFU: “The World Health Organisation (WHO) states that quality of life is ultimately what best corresponds to the very definition of health: a complete state of physical, mental and social well-being. This is why we must support patients in their care pathway by considering their physical, mental and social state. To help with this, the provision of suitable physical activity is essential. Cycling against prostate cancer and promoting this sporting activity is more meaningful than ever.”
