Movember UROwebinar: Debate on screening for PCa

Early screening for prostate cancer has long been a controversial topic for urologists and oncologists alike. On the one hand it can detect cancer while it can still be treated, but on the other hand it also risks overtreatment and a subsequent decline in patients’ quality of life.

The 2012 recommendations by the US Preventive Services Task Force to curb PSA-screening have since led to a drop in prostate biopsies and radical prostatectomies, according to new research published in JAMA Surgery.

On November 22nd 20:00 CET, expert urologists Profs. Declan Murphy and Alberto Briganti are set to debate the USPSTF recommendation against PSA testing, as well as the broader topic of early detection in view of the most recent data. Other screening techniques will also be discussed.

The debate will take place online as part of the EAU’s successful UROwebinar series, and also allow for the online audience to take part in the discussion. Following previous topics such as bladder cancer management and robotic kidney transplantation, this new topic was chosen to tie in to the annual “Movember” prostate cancer awareness campaign.

Interested parties can simply register for the online debate and tune in from their computers and even pose questions to the speakers once it begins.

UROwebinars are a free online educational tool designed by the European Association of Urology and the European School of Urology to attract a broad online audience on a regular basis. Their live, interactive nature makes them a valuable tool for residents or urologists at any level of expertise, and has attracted hundreds of registrations and viewers since the launch of the project in April 2016.
