EAU Adjunct Secretary General for Education Prof. Dr. Hein Van Poppel received the SIU’s Distinguished Career Award at the 36th Congress of the Societé Internationale D’Urologie (SIU) held in Buenos Aires, Argentina.

One of the prestigious awards annually given by the SIU, the award honours Van Poppel's commitment to international urology and significant contributions to boost the links among various urological groups. The award also highlights the aim of the SIU to achieve a dynamic and mutually beneficial collaborative work among urology professionals, thereby improving urological care across international borders.

“We acknowledge your consistent contribution for mutual understanding and stonger partnership among urology associations. We extend our congratulations, as well as those of the other members of the Board of Directors. We are all very proud to have been associated with you in the SIU,” said Dr. Patrick Coloby, SIU President‐Elect and chairman of the SIU Awards Committee.

Van Poppel is a board member of the European Society of Surgical Oncology and the European Organization for Research and Treatment of Cancer, where he is also Study Coordinator and Treasurer of the Genito-Urinary Group. He served as Director of the European School of Urology. He is also a member of the American Association of Genito-Urinary Surgeons, President of the Belgian Society of Urology, Chairman of the Scientific Committee of Europa Uomo, and Faculty Member of the European Society of Medical Oncology.

Van Poppel is first author of more than 200 papers and has co-authored more than 250 additional publications on urologic oncology. He personally received the award last October 20 during the Opening Ceremony of the SIU Annual Congress, marking the 10th occasion the award was given. Previous honorees include Prof. Boccon-Gibod, Dr. Peter Gilling, Prof. Yinglu Guo and Dr. Alan Retik.

The SIU maintains strong collaborative links with the EAU and members of both associations are active participants in the training, research and other educational activities organised and supported by both groups. Founded in Paris with headquarters in Canada, the SIU also recruits international members in the same way that the EAU has extended its reach beyond European borders to include associate members from Asia, the Americas, Middle East and Africa, among other regions.
