History

Europe is called "the cradle of urology", as the world's first urological departments were established there. The EAU History Office examines and documents the past, from the first historical or even pre-historic evidence of what we would today consider urological procedures. By researching and publishing the history of urology, the History Office strengthens the field's identity.

Historical Publications

The EAU History Office has published a huge variety of books since its inception 30 years ago. Reproductions and transcripts of medieval manuscripts with unique and early depictions of urological procedures, biographies of prominent (proto-)urologists and beautifully illustrated books that tell the colourful history of the field.

Every year, a new volume of De Historia Urologiae Europaeae is published, compiling contributions from History Office members or other historical experts and contributors. Together, this series has covered every subject imaginable. The books, including an annually updated table of contents for the entire series, are available on UROsource. The books are freely accessible for EAU Members or paying subscribers. Printed copies are available at the Annual Congress every year.

Other publications include special congress gifts, made available as a token of appreciation to visitors of the EAU’s Annual Congress. Several of these, and other historical publications can also be found on UROsource.
