Clinical growth abroad: A residents journey
In my journey as a doctor, I have always been driven to learn and improve. Urology has long been a passion of mine, and while I have been fortunate to gain valuable experience in surgeries and research within my own clinic, I have always been eager to broaden my horizons by seeking different clinical environments.
When I discovered the European Urology Scholarship Programme (EUSP), I recognised it as the perfect opportunity to reach my goals. Without much hesitation, I immediately applied for the clinical visit programme.
My scholarship journey comprised two remarkable months at the University Hospital Schleswig-Holstein (UKSH) clinic in Lübeck, Germany. It was a rewarding experience that not only allowed me to develop my project on bladder cancer but also provided me with a unique chance to immerse myself in the German language and culture.
During my time at UKSH, I found solid support for my project and even had the opportunity to contribute to another important project where we studied patients who underwent cystectomy divided into 3 groups: those who received neoadjuvant or adjuvant chemotherapy and those who did not receive chemotherapy. The patients were evaluated for overall survival, recurrence, and comorbidity. While two months may seem like a short time, I was amazed at the progress of the study and valuable knowledge I gained from collaborating with the exceptional team at the clinic.
Beyond project work, my days were filled with diverse experiences, from participating in rounds and outpatient clinics to assisting in surgeries. These experiences improved my technical skills and provided me with a deeper understanding of the clinical dynamics at play.
Observing robotic surgeries on a regular basis and engaging in simulation-based learning were particularly enlightening moments that left a lasting impact on my professional growth. Additionally I was impressed to see residents actively participating in international clinical trials.
One of the highlights of my time at UKSH was the opportunity to engage in conversations with esteemed experts such as Prof. Axel Merseburger (DE) and Prof. Mario Kramer (DE). Their wisdom and guidance were instrumental in shaping my vision in urology and reinforced my passion for the field. They consistently showed enthusiasm and provided motivational support.
Outside of the clinic, I cherished every moment exploring the charming city of Lübeck and its surroundings, especially during the winter when the landscape was blanketed with snow. These moments of relaxation were not only refreshing but also provided me with the chance to forge lasting friendships with colleagues.
I am deeply grateful to the EUSP board for granting me this life-changing scholarship. My experience at UKSH has reconfirmed my belief in the power of international collaboration and the importance of stepping outside one's comfort zone to embrace new challenges. To young colleagues, I encourage you to take every chance to embark on similar journeys of discovery and growth. It is a decision you won't regret.
