EAU has joined forces with 14 health organisations to support the Commission’s proposal for smoke-free and aerosol-free environments
Tobacco consumption remains a leading cause of preventable morbidity and mortality in the European Union, being attributable to many forms of cancer, cardiovascular and respiratory diseases, and approximately 700,000 annual deaths. EAU and 13 other European health organisations urge EU Member States to support the EU Commission’s proposal for smoke- and aerosol-free environments.
On 17 September, the Commission proposed recommendations to limit smoking and aerosol devices such as vapes in public open places. This initiative is proposed because of the significant public health evidence that this an effective policy approach which reduces risks associated with a number of health conditions, including bladder and kidney cancer, as well as cardiovascular conditions. This policy is well in line with interventions proposed under the WHO Framework Convention on Tobacco Control, adopted in 2003.
As the Council of EU member states plans to discuss this proposal on Tuesday 4 December, EAU jointly makes the urgent call to support the Commission proposal.
Hein Van Poppel, Chair of the EAU Policy Office., comments:“With tobacco increasing the risk of urological cancers such as bladder and kidney cancer, the EAU is fully supportive of this policy approach towards a tobacco-free generation, which we know is an effective one”.
