EAU24: Opening ceremony and prestigious award winners
Urologists from around the world enjoyed the vibrant energy of the Parisian Cabaret Show with Can-can dancers in dazzling costumes and themed music who took to the stage at the Opening Ceremony of the 39th Annual EAU Congress in Paris, France.
EAU Secretary General Prof. Arnulf Stenzl (DE) extended a warm welcome to all attendees of the congress, and specifically highlighted the strong teamwork upheld within the urological community.
The prestigious EAU Annual Award presentations began with Prof. Stenzl introducing two new EAU honorary members: Prof. Hassan Abol-Enein (EG) and Prof. Jens Rassweiler (AT).
The EAU Willy Gregoir Medal was presented to Prof. Nicolas Mottet (FR) for his significant contributions to the development of urology in Europe, particularly for his service to the EAU Guidelines. Prof. Stenzl wished him well on his upcoming adventure, as he will take a break from urology and embark on a sailing expedition.
Additionally, Prof. Chris Chapple (GB) was honoured with the EAU Frans Debruyne Lifetime Achievement Award for his significant and enduring contributions made to the activities and growth of the EAU.
Promising young urological academic talent was acknowledged, with Dr. Giorgio Gandaglia (IT) receiving the EAU Crystal Matula Award. Innovation in urology was also celebrated, with the EAU Innovators in Urology Award presented to Prof. Prokar Dasgupta (GB), who recently completed his 10,000th robotic surgery procedure.
Highlighting urology research, Assoc. Prof David D’Andrea (AT) received the EAU Hans Marberger Award for the best European paper published on minimally invasive surgery in urology, and Mr. Ivo de Vos (NL) received the EAU Prostate Cancer Research Award for the best paper published on clinical or experimental studies in prostate cancer.
Dr. Erik Briers (BE) won the EAU Patient Advocacy Medal of Excellence for his outstanding contributions to patient advocacy.
For his extraordinary devotion to the history of urology, Dr. Johan Mattelaar (BE) was awarded the EAU Ernest Desnos Prize, with Prof. Philip Van Kerrenbroek (BE) acknowledging that the history of urology is the base for the future.

As the awards ceremony drew to a close, the Cabaret Dance Show took to the stage once more, providing a dazzling finale to the evening’s celebrations. This proceeded the EAU Networking Reception whereby colleagues from around the world had the opportunity to re-connect.
