EUREP24: Residents learn non-technical skills to ensure safe and effective surgery

Organised by the European School of Urology (ESU), the European Urology Residents Education Programme (EUREP24) took place in Prague, Czech Republic over six days earlier this month. This year the comprehensive scientific programme for final year residents included a module on Non-Technical Skills (NTS) training presented by Dr. Nicholas Raison (GB), EAU Section of Outpatient and Office Urology Board Member Dr. Stefan Haensel (NL) and Mr. Gianluigi Zanovello (IT), an ex-fighter pilot and NTS expert.

Dr. Raison, Dr. Haensel and Mr. Zanovello shared essential skills with residents that go beyond the scalpel – such as communication, decision-making, situational awareness, and teamwork.

Dr. Raison: “With over 50 eager participants, the NTS programme focused on the vital skills that extend beyond surgical expertise to ensure safe and effective operations. A highlight of the course was running simulated emergency scenarios with debriefing that got the delegates sweating a little and thinking a lot! These realistic exercises demonstrated just how crucial these non-technical skills are in high-pressure situations.”

“Our mission is to elevate the standard of care in surgery by emphasising these vital competencies. Seeing the engagement and passion from our delegates reinforces how essential NTS sessions are everyone in the surgical community, as they directly contribute to improving patient safety and outcomes.”

Looking ahead, Dr. Raison said their team is eager to continue sharing essential skills that will elevate surgical success, with future NTS courses planned at the Annual EAU Congress (EAU25) in Madrid, Spain next year.
