Free week-long course: The 2014 ESU-Weill Cornell Masterclass in General Urology
The European School of Urology is once again working together with the American Austrian Foundation (AAF) to offer a week-long Masterclass to a select group of young urologists from all around the world. Schloss Arenberg in Salzburg, Austria is set to host around 35 international participants and faculty on 6-12 July, 2014. Participation and travel will be fully reimbursed.
The Masterclass is taught by American and European experts and will feature state-of-the-art lectures on a variety of topics, as well as hands-on training and extensive case discussions. The meeting will be bookended by a pre-seminar and a post-seminar test to gauge progress.
Key topics
This year’s state-of-the-art lectures will be presented on prostate cancer and the management of lower urinary tract symptoms (LUTS), which will include benign prostatic obstruction (BPO), stones and infections. Hands-on laparoscopic training is offered in two three-hour sessions on alternating afternoons.
Participants are also required to present their own case discussions on three of the afternoons, an extremely effective learning tool for young urologists hoping to get an expert’s take on specific cases. “In my opinion, this approach was not only effective but also served as a really good experience on how to lose the fear of presenting before a panel of experts,” said Dr. Juan Manuel Villamizar (Barcelona, ES), participant in 2012. “To present a persuasive view to an audience and speak in another language was definitely good training for the novices among us!”
Past participants also valued the smaller group and close collaboration between participants and staff. “The participating fellows were encouraged to drop the usual formality or distance in order to question and challenge the faculty. The atmosphere during discussions remained respectful and open, with in-depth insights shared,” said Dr. Alice Obaje (Thüringen, DE), participant in 2011.
“For young, ambitious urologists, the Masterclass is also an ideal opportunity to build networks and links with colleagues not only from Europe, but from other overseas countries as well, for future medical collaborations.”
