Mon, 30 Nov 2015

The Brazilian Congress of Urology is regarded as the biggest and most important national urological event in 2015, taking place between 31 October and 4 November at Sul-America Convention Center, in Rio de Janeiro. The congress had more than 3,500 attendants, urologists from all regions of Brazil.

As part of the collaboration between the EAU and the Brazilian Society of Urology (SBU), a joint plenary session was held on 2 November. The EAU representatives were Prof. Christopher Chapple (General Secretary), Prof. John Heesakkers (Chairman of EAU Section of Female and Functional Urology) and Prof. Fred Witjes (Chairman of the MIMBC panel of the EAU Guidelines). The President of the SBU, Prof. Carlos Eduardo Fonseca Corradi, opened the session with Prof. Chapple, highlighting the importance of mutual cooperation activities between SBU and EAU.[MA1] This opening session also included Prof. Luiz Torres (SBU international relations representative).

Prof. Heesakkers (photo) spoke about three different topics: challenges in the management of spinal cord injured patients, lower urinary tract dysfunction in elderly patients, and idiopathic overactive bladder. Prof. Chapple gave two lectures on minimally invasive treatments for urethral strictures and on stress urinary incontinence in women. Prof. Witjes presented innovations on the treatment of muscle-invasive bladder tumors.

Brazilian experts (Prof. Homero Bruschini, Márcio Averbeck, Luis Rios, Cristiano Gomes and Fernando Vaz) took part in a panel discussion on the treatment of post-prostatectomy urinary incontinence, along with Prof. Chapple and Prof. Heesakkers.

The three EAU representatives were active participants in the courses and workshops held during the congress, which were highly appreciated by the attendants. On 2 November, Prof. Chapple also lectured in a symposium on LUTS. This plenary symposium was chaired by the SBU president-elect, Prof. Archimedes Nardozza Jr, and had Prof. Márcio Averbeck (Head of Women's Urology Department) as national speaker. Strategies to improve patients’ adherence to drug treatment were comprehensively discussed. Clinical cases illustrated indications for drug combinations in patients with mixed LUTS.
