London ready for 1st Bi-Annual EULIS Meeting

Thu, 1 Sep 2011

The EAU Section of Urolithiasis will convene on London on 7-10 September for its first ever bi-annual meeting. This will be the first meeting as an EAU affiliate, but EULIS has had enough experience with organising them. There have been 13 previous successful meetings, the last of which took place in 2009 in Como, Italy. The meeting will be chaired chaired by Mr. Noor Buchholz (GB). On the scope and character of the meeting, Buchholz commented: “What sets EULIS apart from other stone societies is that we aim to bring together surgeons, researchers, dieticians, veterinary stone doctors, paediatric stone specialists and many other stakeholders to exchange and discuss state-of-the-art ‘stone business’.”

Almost 200 abstracts have been accepted this year, making for an extensive scientific plan. The contributions have been divided over 11 poster sessions. The meeting also features five urolithiasis workshops, four of which allow for hands-on training. Live surgery takes place throughout the day on Friday, giving viewers a chance to see experts in their fields perform surgery at St Bartholomew’s Hospital through video link-up.

Beside extensive exploration of different surgical techniques in the treatment of stones, special interest goes to the role of diet in stone formation, and cases of stones in animals. A state-of-the-art lecture “Imaging in stones- what to expect from your radiologist” will be given by Dr. Susanne Osther (DK), highlighting the role of radiology in urolithiasis.

The meeting takes place in the centre of London, at the Mermaid Conference & Events Centre. The centre is located on the Thames, in the shadow of St. Paul’s Cathedral, just across from the Tate Modern. Registration is still possible on-site, at the registrations desk.
