Report: Insights from the FEBU International Examination

Dr. Karavitakis shares his experience attending the FEBU International Examination in Indore, India, on Sunday 1 February, 2026. As an examiner, he saw first-hand how urologists used the EAU Guidelines not merely as references, but as practical tools for guidance, education, and rational clinical decision-making. This article reflects on the exam’s international impact and commitment to high-quality patient care.

The title 'Fellow of the European Board of Urology (FEBU)', awarded by the European Board of Urology (EBU), represents one of the most demanding and well-recognised certifications of competence in urology in Europe. It is not merely a knowledge-based exam; rather, it is a comprehensive assessment of clinical reasoning, guideline application, decision-making, and professionalism, aiming to ensure a common, high standard of patient care internationally.

In recent years, a systematic effort has been made toward the strategic outreach and internationalisation of the institution, with the goals of harmonising education, promoting knowledge exchange, and continuously improving the quality of urological care worldwide - giving the European Board of Urology and the FEBU title a truly global footprint.

Within this framework, and as a long-standing member of EBU’s Examination Committee, I had the honour of serving as an examiner and being part of the official FEBU delegation at the FEBU International examination held in Indore, India, The event took place during the annual congress of the Urological Society of India (USI)

Particularly important is the fact that the examination is largely based on the EAU Guidelines, which function as a common “language” of clinical practice.

It is truly impressive to see countries with different cultures, experiences, and healthcare systems converge around the same scientific approach to urology, grounded in shared, evidence-based standards of care. In this context, the EAU Guidelines serve not merely as references, but as practical tools for guidance, education, and rational clinical decision-making.

For those of us actively involved in their writing and revision, it is especially rewarding to witness their tangible international impact and their contribution to ensuring modern, high-quality, evidence-based clinical practice.

Warm congratulations to all the new International FEBU Fellows from India, as well as to their mentors and teachers for the high level of training and guidance they provided. The overall quality of the candidates was truly impressive - thoroughly prepared, clinically mature, with strong critical thinking skills and a clear commitment to evidence-based medicine, reflecting the high standards of contemporary urological education.

Equally important, however, was the human element: their kindness, respect, and genuine professionalism - qualities that ultimately give true meaning to medical practice.

"I feel grateful to be part of this effort. An experience meaningful both scientifically and personally"
