“The masterclass gave us an even better perspective on our future in endourology”
We are at the beginning of our professional urological careers, and attending the ESU Masterclass on Urolithiasis was a monumental experience. It gave us an even better perspective on our future in endourology.
Organised by the European School of Urology (ESU) and led by Prof. Angerri Feu, the masterclass took place on 4–5 June 2026 at Fundació Puigvert in Barcelona, Spain. The venue, organisation, and overall atmosphere were outstanding. Most remarkably, the welcoming environment made it feel like being at home.
What the masterclass covered
As for the presentations, we found it hard to single out any of them as the scientific content was excellent and high-level.
We gained step-by-step insights into supine endoscopic combined intrarenal surgery (ECIRS), while live and semi-live surgical demonstrations showcased a variety of advanced procedures, including mini percutaneous nephrolithotomy (Mini-PCNL), retrograde intrarenal surgery (RIRS), and the management of complex staghorn stones.
In addition to surgical techniques, the programme explored extracorporeal shock wave lithotripsy (ESWL), stone composition, metabolic evaluation, medical treatment, and nutritional strategies. The faculty also discussed the advantages and limitations of single-use versus reusable ureteroscopes and reviewed the latest intracorporeal lithotripsy technologies, such as holmium, thulium fibre, and pulsed thulium:YAG lasers, alongside combined ultrasonic and pneumatic energy platforms.
The second day focused on optimising surgical outcomes and patient safety. Sessions addressed the importance of suction, intrarenal pressure, and temperature management during endourological procedures, complemented by live surgeries featuring Mini-PCNL in the supine position and RIRS. Additional lectures covered the prevention and management of complications in flexible ureteroscopy and PCNL, radiological protection for endourologists, and further semi-live demonstrations highlighting advanced RIRS techniques. Clinical case discussions throughout the course reinforced the practical application of the knowledge gained.
In addition, participating in the hands-on training gave us a fantastic opportunity to present during the case report session and receive advice from the key voices in the field.
Additional feedback from fellow participants
Fellow participants stated that the masterclass was well organised, highly educational, and full of practical tips and tricks. They commended the comprehensive coverage, and the combination of live and semi-live surgical demonstrations alongside informative didactic lectures.
The participants also shared that the hands-on training sessions were a welcome addition, providing valuable practical experience and enhancing the overall learning experience. They also requested for more clinical cases in upcoming editions of the masterclass.
