YAU Trauma & Reconstructive Working Group

The Trauma and Reconstructive Urology Working Group is an international research group dedicated to advancing clinical care and research in reconstructive surgery of the lower and upper urinary tract in both cisgender and transgender patients. Our work primarily focuses on urethral stricture disease, surgical management of urinary incontinence, and upper urinary tract reconstruction.

A major priority of the group is the standardization of terminology, diagnostic assessment, outcome reporting, and the use of validated patient-reported outcome measures (PROMs) in reconstructive urology, to improve comparability and quality across studies and clinical practice.

Projects

Our current flagship projects address several key knowledge gaps in the field, including:

  • SAFER Study: Optimal urethral management at the time of artificial urinary sphincter explantation for erosion
  • Project on VUAS: Classification systems and treatment strategies for vesicourethral anastomotic stenosis after prostate cancer therapy
  • PANTS Study: Management algorithms for urethral strictures following phalloplasty
  • Stricture-fecta Initiative: Development of a core outcome set for urethral reconstruction—defined by both specialists and patients
  • OMEGA Study: Evidence-based guidance on sequencing artificial urinary sphincter implantation in relation to pelvic radiotherapy
