ESFU history
The Section was originally established as the European Society of Neuro-Urology. In 2008 this Society joined the EAU as the EAU Section of Female & Functional Urology (ESFFU) dealing with the entire spectrum of functional issues in neurological and non-neurological patients of all genders. In 2024 the “Female” designation was removed from the Section’s name as a redundancy. Today, we are one of EAU’s sections which connects experts and young specialists interested in functional urology.
The content of Functional Urology
Under the umbrella of Functional Urology, there are all the issues related to the Lower Urinary Tract (LUT) function. All the signs and symptoms related to the storage or the voiding phase of micturition cycle are subjects of ESFU. Incontinence, lower urinary tract symptoms (LUTS), overactive bladder syndrome and urinary retention are some common urological issues that ESFU deals with. Also, we cover broad topics such as Benign Prostatic Obstruction and neurogenic Lower Urinary Tract Dysfunction (nLUTD). Additionally, all the functional issues of LUT cancer-treated patients, kidney transplanted and transgender individuals are under the umbrella of this section.
What we do
We currently focus on several educational and scientific activities, such as webinars, masterclasses, and scientific sessions at the EAU congress and other scientific meetings. We aim to educate urologists and affiliated medical practitioners about our fast-advancing field's best practices and research breakthroughs.
In the upcoming years, we plan to increase our activities and create a wider awareness among medical students, urologists, general practitioners, and affiliated professionals on the opportunities and progress in the field of functional urology.
For whom
All EAU members interested in functional urology will benefit from our initiatives; from junior to senior urologists and affiliated medical professionals. They will find an interesting and stimulating angle among the ESFU initiatives.
How to contribute
If you have suggestions regarding the content of our meetings or ideas on how the ESFU can contribute to the development of our subspecialty, please do not hesitate to contact us. Additionally, if you are organising a scientific event or developing an educational program in the field of functional urology, we welcome you to discuss the possibilities for cooperation.
Are you an EAU Member already involved and published within the subspecialty? We encourage you to become an Associate of the ESFU Section today to receive the latest information on the work of the Section and shape its activities. In this case please contact us at esfu@uroweb.org.
