EAU Section of Transplantation Urology
Kidney transplantation is the preferred treatment for end-stage renal disease, offering improved survival rates and quality of life. This procedure is currently performed by various specialists worldwide, including urologists, vascular surgeons, and transplant surgeons. The aim of this section is to provide young urologists, especially in countries where kidney transplantation is not typically conducted by urologists, with access to this remarkable field. Having experienced urology experts involved in kidney transplantation creates an ideal environment for the ongoing education and mentorship of young urologists.
Background
This section was established some time ago and has included many prominent urologists, particularly from Spain, Portugal, and France, where it is urologists who primarily oversee kidney transplantation. Its smaller size reflects the considerable variability in dedicated surgeons in this field worldwide.
The current board consists of relatively young urologists who specialise in kidney transplantation and are recognised globally (organ presentation, living donation, robotics…). The number of associate members is increasing, featuring promising young urologists with great potential. They are supported by honorary and ex-officio members with extensive expertise, ensuring a bright future for this subspecialty within urology
For whom
We aim to serve as a unifying nexus for urologists, nephrologists, vascular surgeons, transplant surgeons, and transplant coordinators. Our goal is to provide a forum for updating knowledge, disseminating scientific advances in renal transplantation, and facilitating the exchange of experiences among all professionals involved.
This section is open to all specialists, whether urologists or not, who are interested in this field, regardless of their previous experience. If you are interested in becoming an associate, please don’t hesitate to contact us.

Our activities
It is essential for the Transplantation Section to promote initiatives in clinical, basic, and translational research across all areas of renal transplantation. To achieve this goal, our section has been divided into different working groups that focus on specific aspects of kidney transplantation, including organ preservation, robotics, living donation, and oncology. Each working group is actively developing various projects.
We host a Masterclass on Kidney Transplantation every two years in Madrid, offer webinars throughout the year, and conduct sessions at the Annual EAU Congress. Additionally, we collaborate with the EAU’s Education Office to develop hands-on training in kidney transplantation.
