Women in Urology – Dr. Pauwaert and Dr. Ripa discuss the resident perspective in urology
In Episode 9, “The urology resident perspective” of the series “Women in urology: Dare to thrive”, Dr. Kim Pauwaert (BE) and Dr. Francesco Ripa (IT) offer an honest and personal look into the realities of residency from both female and male perspectives.
Drawing on their training experiences in Belgium, Italy and the UK, they discuss the changing gender landscape in urology, the importance of visible role models and how mentorship shapes confidence and career choices.
Dr. Pauwaert shares candid reflections on balancing demanding training with societal expectations placed on women, including the challenges of long hours, family responsibilities and concerns around pregnancy risks for surgical trainees.
Together, they examine how work culture, flexibility and institutional support can improve the residency experience for all, regardless of gender. The episode closes with an optimistic view of the future, as both speakers note the growing presence of female urologists and the positive shift in patient and professional perceptions.
