Women in Urology - Dr. Pietropaolo and Dr. Mir discuss discuss the realities of building an academic career
In Episode 2, “Academic career – The long and winding road?” of the series “Women in Urology: Dare to Thrive”, Dr. Amelia Pietropaolo (GB) and Dr. Carmen Mir (US) explore the opportunities and obstacles women face in building an academic career in urology. They highlight the persistence of gender gaps in leadership, the structural barriers that limit women’s access to networks and senior positions, and the pressures of balancing academia with personal life.
Both speakers emphasise the value of mentorship and sponsorship, sharing how role models and supportive colleagues helped them progress, while also reflecting on moments when barriers or cultural biases made the journey more difficult. They discuss positive shifts in recent years, including greater awareness of diversity at conferences and in academic societies, while questioning whether current measures go far enough.
Their conversation also touches on the importance of collaboration, networking, and building resilient research communities that encourage young urologists to thrive. Finally, they share personal advice for the next generation: seek mentors, stay curious, and remember why you chose research in the first place.
