From urology to koalas: Insights and highlights from USANZ Trainee Week
November brought an incredible opportunity for us, as we were selected to participate in the Urological Society of Australia and New Zealand (USANZ) Trainee Week 2024 in Brisbane. To earn this opportunity, we had to win a competitive application process after participating in the European Urology Residents Education Programme (EUREP). Little did we know that this journey would offer an experience as educational as it was enriching.
The Trainee Week kicked off with one of the highlights of the programme: the chance to observe the mock certification examination on the very first day. This exam, taken by third-year residents, provided invaluable insight into the rigorous standards of urology training in Australia and New Zealand. Although we were not participants, we had the opportunity to observe the four sections of the exam - pathology, surgery and anatomy, radiology, and the structured oral exam. This fast-paced and challenging format allowed us to compare the urology training systems of Australia and New Zealand with those in Europe.
Throughout the week, we delved into an extensive scientific programme covering a variety of topics, from prostate and bladder cancer management to paediatrics and radiology. The sessions, led by experts, were interactive and included presentations by residents. The highlight of the week was “Masters of the Uroverse,” a lively trivia competition where teams of residents from different regions competed to showcase their knowledge in urology. We were warmly included into the teams and even had a costume prepared for us! It was the perfect blend of learning and fun.
Unmatched hospitality
The social programme was another standout feature of the week. From the welcome function to the stunning final dinner, the hospitality was impeccable. These events gave us the opportunity to network with fellow residents, specialists, and international guests in a relaxed environment. We felt deeply welcomed, and special thanks are due to Ms. Jenny Hislop and Ms. Deborah Klein for their incredible coordination, which made us feel at home even before we arrived in Brisbane.
A wild encounter: Lone Pine Koala Sanctuary
No trip to Australia would be complete without experiencing its unique wildlife. Our visit to the Lone Pine Koala Sanctuary was a dream come true. Feeding kangaroos, petting koalas, and learning about their habits was unforgettable.
Reflection
Looking back, Brisbane offered so much more than we had anticipated. It was not just the scientific knowledge or professional insights, but also the warmth, hospitality, and cultural experiences that made this journey remarkable. We are deeply grateful to the USANZ team, the EAU, and everyone who contributed to this enriching experience. It has broadened our horizons in urology and strengthened our commitment to continuing to contribute to this incredible field. To future participants: prepare for a week filled with learning, connection, and unforgettable memories. Australia has a unique way of leaving an indelible mark on those who visit, and the USANZ Trainee Week, with its vibrant energy and welcoming people, is no exception.
