With approximately 560 delegates and faculty in attendance, UROonco25 took place in Seville, Spain from Thursday 19 to Saturday 21 June 2025. The meeting was organised under the guidance of the EAU Section of Oncological Urology, led by Chair Prof. Alessandro Volpe (IT).

Leading experts delivered state-of-the-art lectures on the latest research and novel technologies. The programme also featured multidisciplinary case discussions, rapid-fire debates, and delegates participated in interactive roundtable sessions. In addition, Hands-on training (HOTs), European School of Urology (ESU) courses, and the STEPs programme for young urologists took place.

Less can be more

Across multiple sessions, a unifying message resonated strongly: ‘first, do no harm’. This principle was echoed through themes of personalised care, treatment de-intensification, and the continued advancement of precision medicine.

On prostate cancer, Dr. Lara Rodriguez-Sanchez (FR) emphasised the importance of a holistic approach: “Treatment must balance accurate staging, oncological benefit, and the risk of adverse events. The patient must be considered as a whole – not just as a nomogram, imaging result, or biomarker. New trials are paving the way toward precision medicine.”

Dr. Jose Luis Dominguez Escrig (ES) highlighted a shift in the treatment paradigm for urothelial cancer: “A key word in urothelial cancer in 2025 is ‘de-intensification’ of therapy. We are focused on active surveillance, office fulguration, and chemoablation – re-thinking the management of intermediate-risk NMIBC.”

For rare tumours, Prof. Chris Protzel (DE) advocated: “First, do no harm. Be less invasive, avoid unnecessary chemotherapy, prioritise organ-sparing surgery, approach follow-up with care, and listen to your patients.”

On renal cancer, Dr. Riccardo Campi (IT): “We need to evolve as urologists. The UROonco25 programme underscored the momentum toward precision oncology in RCC and the critical role of collaboration among urologists, medical oncologists, and radiation oncologists to personalise care and improve patient outcomes.”

Watch expert video interviews on key onco-urology topics:

  • The management of cystic masses – Assoc. Prof. Carlotta Palumbo spoke to Prof. Alessandro Volpe about the latest approaches to managing cystic masses. Prof. Volpe shared practical tips on imaging strategies, surgical approaches – including the role of clamping, intraoperative ultrasound, and 3D models – and how to handle intraoperative cyst rupture. He stressed the importance of good planning and intraoperative precision to optimise outcomes and minimise complications. Watch video interview.
  • When do I consider segmental ureterectomy? – Dr. Benjamin Pradere interviewed Dr. Francesco Soria on distal ureterectomy for the management of upper urothelial carcinoma (UTUC). Dr. Soria discusses kidney-sparing approaches, surgical procedures and patient selection – especially for high-risk cases. Also, learn about recent and upcoming studies that may influence future guidelines. Watch video interview.
  • Artificial intelligence and prostate cancer – Dr. Giancarlo Marra (IT) interviewed Prof. Prokar Dasgupta (GB) on the hot topic of artificial intelligence (AI) and prostate cancer, including the challenges and opportunities when integrating AI into daily clinical practice. According to Prof. Dasgupta, while AI will enhance precision and efficiency, it won’t replace the judgement and adaptability of surgeons – at least not any time soon. The future lies in collaboration: human intelligence with machine intelligence. Watch video interview.
  • Is there a role of PET Glu for upper tract urothelial carcinoma staging? – Dr. Benjamin Pradere talked to Dr. Bas van Rhijn (NL) about the early adoption of PET/CT in the Netherlands and its diagnostic value with selected cases when standard imaging is inconclusive. Watch the full interview to learn more about the evolving role of PET-Glu for UTUC staging. Watch video interview.
  • Roundtable discussion on radical cystectomy for NMIBC – Featuring Assoc. Prof. Jonathan Aning, Dr. Carmen Mir and Dr. Marco Moschini.  What defines high-risk non-muscle-invasive cancer (NMIBC)? When should we consider radical cystectomy for NMIBC, and how do patient values weigh against oncological risks? Experts discuss stratification, progression risk, patient-centred decision-making, and how modern data reshapes our approach. Watch video of roundtable discussion.
