E-course: Surgery for continence in children and adolescents
Surgery for continence in children and adolescents is required when all other treatments fail. This is done through preservation of the upper urinary tract (UUT) to improve continence and facilitate bladder emptying. The surgical procedures involved in the surgery for continence in children and adolescents are as follows:
- To improve reservoir: Bladder augmentation, bladder autoaugmentation, and bladder substitution
- To better continence: Bulking agents endoscopic injection, sling bladder neck reconstruction, artificial sphincter, and bladder neck closure
- To facilitate emptying: Vesicostomy, button cystostomy, channels such as Mitrofanoff or Monti, and ileal conduit.
The experts will present and discuss the procedures during this e-course. They will take indications, patients’ selection, advantages, complications, long-term risk, and management into consideration.
The e-course will focus on suggestions for proper and optimal counselling with patients and timing for different procedures taking into account parental support, physiological age (pre/post puberty), and psychological status.
