Women in urology: "Dare to thrive" podcast series

Over several months spanning late 2025 and early 2026, we released an inspiring EAU Podcast series that brought together the voices of women shaping the future of urology. Urologists from around the world shared their experiences, challenges, and achievements - covering topics such as leadership, mentorship, inclusivity, resilience, and work-life balance.

  • Episode 1 featured a conversation between Dr. Amelai Pietropaolo (GB) and Prof. Maria Ribal (ES) on the "Leadership ladder: Creating your own path". They talk about the challenges and opportunities of pursuing leadership in a traditionally male-dominated specialty. Drawing on their personal journeys, they discuss the persistence of gender stereotypes, their experience of imposter syndrome, and the importance of building confidence through knowledge, hard work, and supportive networks.
  • In Episode 2, Dr. Amelia Pietropaolo and Dr. Carmen Mir (US) discuss the "Opportunities and obstacles women face in building an academic career in urology". They highlight the persistence of gender gaps in leadership, the structural barriers that limit women’s access to networks and senior positions, and the pressures of balancing academia with personal life.
  • In Episode 3, Women surgeons in Asia – Pioneering progress” Dr. Kinju Adhikari (NP) and Dr. Steffi Kar Kei Yuen (HK) shared their experiences as pioneering female surgeons in Asia. Dr. Adhikari recounts her path from Nepal to becoming a leading onco-urologist and robotic surgeon in India, while Dr. Yuen reflects on her work at the Chinese University of Hong Kong and the evolving role of women in urology across the region.
  • In Episode 4, Women surgeons in Latin America: Leading change”, Dr. Catalina Mendoza (CO) and Dr. Mariela Corrales Acosta (FR) discuss the evolving role of women surgeons in Latin America.
  • In Episode 5, Role models in academic urology: The WUO perspective”, Dr. Sarah Psutka and Dr. Sima Porten reflect on the role of mentorship, collaboration and visibility through the lens of the Women in Urologic Oncology (WUO). They discuss how WUO has become a platform for fostering diversity, leadership and professional growth, creating opportunities for women to contribute to academic excellence and clinical innovation.
  • In Episode 6, The mentor perspective: Welcoming diversity”, Dr. Michelle Jo Semins (US) and Prof. Bhaskar Somani (GB) shared their insights on how mentorship can shape more inclusive and equitable professional environments.
  • In Episode 7, Imposter syndrome and resilience” Dr. Silvia Secco (IT), Dr. Rianne Lammers (NL) and Dr. Guido Cereda (IT) shared open and personal reflections on imposter syndrome and the many forms it takes throughout a urological career.
  • In Episode 8, Inclusivity challenge: Creating transformative culture” Dr. Joe Philip (GB) and Dr. Silvia Proietti (IT) explored what true inclusivity looks like in modern urology and how cultural transformation begins with everyday behaviours.
  • Episode 9, The urology resident perspective” Dr. Kim Pauwaert (BE) and Dr. Francesco Ripa (IT) offer an honest and personal look into the realities of residency from both female and male perspectives.
  • Episode 10: "My andrologist is a woman: Redefining expectations" was hosted by Dr. Marta Skrodzka (GB) and Dr. Nadja Stivalet (FR). They discussed how being a woman in andrology is reshaping professional practice and patient expectations.
